Can you guess how a Bay Area nurse became a MAHA ally and an anti-vaccine advocate?

That’s right - a vaccine injury story.
Let’s Talk About How a Bay Area Nurse Became a MAHA Ally and Anti-Vaccine Advocate
A vaccine injury story that has changed a few times.
How?
Well, let’s take a look.
“By 2021, Wulbrecht was ready to return to her work. But first, she needed to get the recently released COVID vaccine as part of hospital mandates.”

Well, for one thing, there was no mandate to get vaccinated in California when she got her vaccine on January 19!
The mandates came about six months later.
What else?
Her story about what happened after she got her COVID vaccine has changed…
“Twelve minutes after her Moderna shot, she stumbled into the paramedic tent with soaring blood pressure and a racing heartbeat.”

Back in 2021, she reports that she ‘stumbled into the paramedic tent,’ and now?
“But by the 12-minute mark, she said, her heart began to race and her body felt numb. She sank in her car seat, convinced she was going to die, and slammed her hand on the horn. At the hospital, according to medical records reviewed by the Chronicle, she was told she was having a severe adverse reaction and was given medication to suppress an overactive immune response.”

And now, the paramedic tent has turned into a hospital visit.
A hospital visit that was not mentioned back in 2021…
A visit to the hospital was mentioned during an interview in 2023, but there was no stumbling into a paramedic tent…
“I never questioned anything, so I rushed to go and get my vaccine. I actually drove three hours to get it because I was that eager. This was the first place that I could get it since I wasn’t actively working at the hospital at the time. Within 12 minutes of getting my vaccine, I was on the ground.
This warmth took over my body and I became numb. I started shaking uncontrollably. I felt like something really bad was going on. At first, I thought maybe I’m having an anaphylactic reaction. The paramedics were surrounding me and I had all these people there. They were taking my vitals which were extremely unstable. My blood pressure was so high that I could have stroked out. My heart rate was really high and things went downhill from there. Eventually, I was taken away by ambulance to the hospital.”

The main problem, of course, is that we don’t get a clear timeline of when any of her symptoms begin.
“And so began a calvary of severe fatigue, brain fog, imbalance and other symptoms that are still with her eight months later.”

We especially don’t know how soon after her COVID vaccine they began, although it sounds like it was soon after.
“Those first few weeks I was at the doctor’s office every single day if I wasn’t in the hospital.”

And it sounds like she had very real symptoms, as she was reportedly being treated with high-dose steroids and “really high-dose antihistamines.”
“I was in the doctor’s office every single day, and they were adjusting meds.”

But what were they treating?
We don’t know for sure, but it seems that the doctors she has seen think that she may have POTS and MCAS.
Does that mean her symptoms were caused by her COVID vaccine?
In an email to Dr. Avindra Nath, the clinical director of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke at the NIH, Wulbrecht described feeling like a “prisoner of my body.
“I’m almost a year out and I have no answers, no real medical treatment other than masking symptoms and I want to get my life back so I can help fight this pandemic,” she said.
In a response, Nath wrote that he and his colleagues were “just as mystified as everyone else” about these complications and that it appeared she had seen all the specialists that would be able to help. “We do not have any special testing or medications to offer at the moment,” he said.

Although it was included in the San Francisco Chronicle article, it is important to note that the above email exchange with Dr. Avindra Nath is not any kind of validation that a COVID vaccine caused her symptoms.
Lastly, let’s see what studies have said about COVID vaccines being associated with POTS.
Apparent risks of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome diagnoses after COVID-19 vaccination and SARS-Cov-2 Infection - found that vaccination was associated with a possible small increased incidence of POTS, but they could not establish causation
Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome after COVID-19 vaccination: A systematic review - found that the risk of POTS was 5.35 times higher post-infection compared to post-vaccination
Some studies have suggested an association, but still, there is not enough evidence to accept or reject a causal relationship between COVID vaccines and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS).
And we know that most patients with MCAS tolerate their COVID vaccines.
“Patients with suspected or confirmed mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) can tolerate COVID-19 vaccination, according to an abstract being presented at the 2022 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI).”

What else?
Basically, it is just sad that she went from being a nurse, helping to save lives, to working for anti-vaccine influencers who scare people away from getting life-saving vaccines.
After all, even if her symptoms were caused by a COVID vaccine, her combination of symptoms and prolonged disability would be extremely rare.
How rare?
Probably on the order of 1 in a million doses or even rarer.
Lastly, considering that her symptoms resemble long COVID, which is relatively common, and that you can reduce your odds of developing long COVID by getting a COVID vaccine, you would think that she would still be advocating for them.
That’s something else all of her media coverage is leaving out…

From saving lives to potentially ending lives.
Wait, what? She drove three hours?? I got my first Covid vaccine in the East Bay February 10, 2021. They were readily available for health professionals. I wasn't at a hospital. I spoke with the health department and got approval for school nurses to get vaccinated because they were working with children. The health departments were happy to provide the vaccine to health professionals. Besides, if she couldn't get a vaccine in the Bay Area because she didn't work in a hospital, where did she go three hours away that would give her the vaccine in a location she didn't even work in? Maybe I missed something, but that doesn't make any sense. Did she drive to Fresno? From Fresno?
