Propaganda About the Ups and Downs of Measles Cases
A pharmacist creates propaganda with a chart about measles cases.
Anti-vaccine influencers often use charts and graphs to trick people into thinking that vaccines don’t work or aren’t necessary.
You can see that kind of propaganda in this post from a pharmacist who wants you to think that it is not unusual that we are having record-breaking measles outbreaks lately.

The chart she has posted certainly makes it seem like things haven’t changed much in the past 20 to 50 years, right?
But that is not right!
She does it by using a chart with a logarithmic scale to hide the fact that there has actually been a big drop in measles cases over the years!
Just take a look at the same chart, simply changing it from a logarithmic to a linear scale, and you can see what I am talking about.
All of a sudden, you don’t see any of those ups and downs that MissInformed was talking about…

Even her idea that things aren’t unusual because we are having outbreaks with high vaccination rates is all wrong.
The problem isn’t our overall vaccination rates!
The issue is that there are clusters or pockets of susceptibles who are unvaccinated in many communities and this is what leads to large outbreaks.
For example, vaccination rates in South Carolina schools are about 91% for the MMR vaccine. But, those rates are as low as 20% for many of the schools in Spartanburg County. And that’s why they have the largest measles outbreak in over 30 years.
It is not the usual ups and downs!

And know that this kind of propaganda is the opposite of informed consent!

The news sure wants us to think so!
But here is the thing, the measles vaccine remains a recommended vaccine despite other changes to the childhood immunization schedule.
MMR uptake is still well over 90% in most of the country.
Not enough time has passed to reduce the vaccine uptake enough to be the cause of any outbreak. Maybe in a few years? Sure. But not two months.
Uptake of the vaccine dropped a few percents after Covid, not because of RFK Jr or the CDC. The mandates and policies of 2020 are most likely to blame for poorer vaccination rates, and rightfully so!
