As we see more outbreaks of measles, we will see more people seeking medical care when they get sick with measles. And, of course, since measles is so contagious, that’s one of the ways that these outbreaks keep growing.

That makes it important that you call ahead if you suspect that you might have measles before going to a doctor’s office, urgent care, or emergency room.

How?

Protect high-risk patients in your office who might be too young to be vaccinated or who might have a true medical contraindication to getting vaccinated.

One way to screen your patients is by posting warning posters and reminders about the signs and symptoms of measles.

It is best to figure out that a patient has measles before they have been sitting in your waiting room, exposing your other patients. This checklist can help.

Two doses of the MMR vaccine are your best protection against measles, but remember that even infants as young as 6 months can get an early MMR for protection and toddlers and preschoolers can get their second MMR early too.
