Have you heard that the CDC is reviewing an application to create a new COVID vaccine injury ICD-10 code?
An application by who?
An organization that promotes stories of vaccine injuries from anti-vaccine influencers and pushes the idea that just about anything that happens to you in the hours, days, weeks, months, or years after you get a COVID vaccine must be caused by “Post COVID Vaccine Syndrome (PCVS).”
And that’s why they want the new ICD-10 codes for those vaccine injuries…
What are ICD-10 Codes?
Wait, y’all know what ICD-10 codes are, right?
“ICD-10 stands for International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision. The World Health Organization (WHO) owns and maintains the global ICD system. Although the WHO has since released a newer version of ICD codes (ICD-11), the United States continues to use a clinical modification of ICD-10. These code sets give providers, hospitals, payers, and public health agencies a shared language for documenting illness, injury, and inpatient care in a consistent way.”

Basically, an International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) code helps your provider describe what is going on with you when you go to an office, clinic, or hospital, etc.
For example, if you are diagnosed with an uncomplicated case of measles, your provider would note that by using ICD-10 code B05.9.
On the other hand, if you had a fever after your MMR vaccine, they would use ICD-10 code R50.83.
Yes, we already have many ICD-10 codes related to vaccine side effects!
CPT Codes vs ICD-10 Codes
So is this about billing codes?
Kind of…
The ICD-10 code defines why you went to the doctor.
In addition, we have CPT codes (maintained by the AMA) that describe the kind of services you had at your visit, or what happened during the visit. The CPT code shows if it was a short office visit vs. a visit to the ER, etc.
And to get the full picture of what is going on, and to be able to bill/get pain, you need both codes.
That’s why there are already over 70,000 ICD-10 codes in use in the United States.

Which raises the question, do we really require even more ICD-10 codes?
“ICD-10 also provides greater capacity to track essential data of disease patterns and outbreaks of disease, and to help identify characteristics and circumstances of affected individuals.”
What Is ICD-10?
Well, since ICD-10 codes are also used for public health tracking and data analysis, you might be thinking, the more codes the better, right?
On the other hand, since anti-vaccine influencers have been pushing the idea that anything and everything that happens in the minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, and years after someone gets a COVID vaccine is a COVID vaccine injury, it is easy to see that a specific COVID vaccine injury ICD-10 code will be abused.
“April 17, 2026, is deadline for receipt of public comments on proposed new codes and revisions presented at the March 17-18, 2026 ICD-10 Coordination and Maintenance Committee Meeting being considered for implementation on October 1, 2026.”
