Do you remember when Donald Trump, RFK, Jr, Dr. Oz, and lots of other folks were pushing hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for COVID?

Donald Trump and many others promoted the work of Didier Raoult, which was deeply flawed and unreliable and is now under criminal investigation.

They were mostly responding to the research of Didier Raoult, who had published papers saying hydroxychloroquine, especially when used with azithromycin, was an effective treatment for COVID.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t.

“In later studies, combination therapy did not significantly improve, although side effects were higher in the combination arm. Moreover, the combination therapy in hospitalized COVID-19 patients, many of whom may have had concurrent renal or hepatic dysfunction, could have aggravated the QT-prolonging potential of these drugs.”

It just caused more side effects!

Which wasn’t a surprise to most people…

Still, Didier Raoult and his team continued to tout papers saying it did.

Anti-vaccine influencers continued to support Raoult even after a criminal investigation had been opened and it became clear that there were serious breaches of research ethics in his papers. From RFK, Jr and Dr. Oz to Del Bigtree and Joe Mercola, they not only promoted the use of hydroxychloroquine, they defended Didier Raoult.

Papers that would soon be found “to have used questionable and concerning ethics approval processes across hundreds of studies.”

And what were the consequences?

• dozens of his papers have been retracted, and hundreds more have been labeled as potentially having serious problems with an “Expression of Concern”

• Didier Raoult still can’t practice medicine in France, as he is still under a two year ban

• a criminal investigation of his research is still underway, concerning the use of forged documents and doing research without proper justification or authorization

More seriously though, millions of people were unnecessarily treated with hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin!

And many of the people who support Didier Raoult are still in charge of our public health systems…

“If Oz had reviewed/read the study correctly he would have found many of the problems” that were raised about it, said Lonni Besançon, an assistant professor in data visualization at Linköping University in Sweden and a member of the international research team that did the new analysis, which was published this month in the journal Research Integrity and Peer Review
