But it isn’t true that the CDC did nothing as the unprocessed reports built up.
The CDC quickly began working to find ways to safely speed up processing.
Ultimately though, CDC had to modify the contract with the processor to help ensure the VAERS reports were cleared on a timely basis:
hiring 90 more people to clear the backlog
hiring an additional 200 more people
creating a surge operation to handle new reports
What else?
The backlog of reports was cleared by May.
And of course, while the backlog was unfortunate and reduced the timeliness and completeness of VAERS signal detection during that period, it did not mean that health authorities did not have any data as they made safety recommendations.
For one thing, the anaphylaxis signal was still found despite this temporary problem with VAERS!

And this temporary problem with VAERS did not delay finding the myocarditis signal in teens and young adults, as many of them weren’t yet eligible to be vaccinated!
Lastly, VAERS is not the only vaccine safety system that health authorities rely on.
